Joint Health |
One of the most common health problems facing Americans today are achy joints and pains. Millions of American adults suffer from musculoskeletal issues which is not surprising given that the human body is made up of some 200 joints that connect our bones. Almost anyone can find themselves suffering from joint pain. Osteoarthritis, however, starts as we show other symptoms of aging—typically age 50 for women and 45 for men. Men typically show signs first in their spines, hips and wrists; whereas women show signs in the ankles, feet, knees and hands. |
There are many types of joints within the body. Ball/socket joints (such as those found in your shoulder) or hinges (like your knee or elbow) all work to help the body twist, bend and allow us to move about. All joints are comprised of connective tissue. Each has a ligament connecting muscles to the bone and cartilage, which is an elastic tissue that cushions the materials between your joints. Cartilage helps absorb shock and prevent bones from grinding against one another. Osteoarthritis occurs when this cartilage starts breaking and wearing down. Arthritis is simply a word for inflammation of the joint. When it occurs, it may cause pain, swelling and even loss of motion in the joint. The knee is the most common area for such pain. Many factors can contribute to joint problems including aging and injury; however, there are many modern advances which help reduce risk factors associated with aging or injuries to joints. There are many ways of reducing pain of arthritis, such as hip and knee replacements. Although joint pain may seem like an inevitable part of life, there are many things that you can do to control and prevent joint problems.

The best way to reduce the onset of joint injury and problems is to get adequate daily exercise and ensure that your body is receiving the proper amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients required for a healthy body. Did you know that today’s modern diet limits the number of nutrients available in the body? There are many supplements available today that can help your body, including your joints, remain healthy and strong. The following supplements are recommended for joint health: Chondroitin is a compound known as a glycosaminoglycan which is required in order to produce and maintain healthy cartilage that minimizes joint damage. Fish Oil (Omega-3 fatty acids) Fish oils are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids which help reduce inflammation and swelling within the body. This reduction of swelling helps prevent damage to joint tissues. They relieve pain and are a great supplement for those experiencing joint pain and arthritis. Glucosamine is an amino acid used in the body to help naturally lubricate joints. It helps build cartilage and other joint tissues which improve the flexibility of joints—preventing injury and damage. Methylsulfonylmethane or MSM is an important supplement that helps reduce stiffness, inflammation and general joint pain. It works within the body to improve the flexibility and health of ligaments found in joints throughout the body. If you or someone you know experiences joint pain, including arthritis, you may want to speak to a healthcare professional about diet, exercise and available supplements. Make sure to talk to your doctor about any current medication or supplements you are taking, as these may impact the effectiveness of additional supplements. |
